El País and Chávez: Why verification matters

The publication by the Spanish newspaper El País of a fake picture of Hugo Chavez on its frontpage might become one of the most embarrasing chapters of media mistakes in the last years. Specially because the picture was previously rejected by El País main competitor: El Mundo.

El País published a rectification already. It is necessary to be humble. Always. Cause even if you are an expert, media mistakes happen.

Here you can find a compilation of useful tips and readings for verification of digital contents (including video verification). Most of them refer to best practices in foreign media, cause verification protocols for digital contents are not widespread among Spain media yet.

I make regular comments about this field (using the tag #verification) in @globograma Twitter account.

Chávez
Fake picture of Chavez. It was taken from an old video in YouTube.

What follows is the explanation of El Mundo’s director, Pedro J. Ramírez, about why they rejected the picture (in Spanish). It is important to notice that they did not reject it because of verification concerns, which maybe should have been the case at least at first glance, but because of moral and economic reasons:

The end.
